The Cavan and Leitrim Railway
The Cavan and Leitrim Railway in Dromod was one of the most fascinating, and at one time busiest, of Ireland’s narrow-gauge railways. This lovingly restored railway offers you the chance to step back in time and experience the age of steam transport in rural Ireland.
According to the Book of Fenagh, the founder of the original monastery at the site of Fenagh Abbey was St. Caillin, who was said to have arrived in Fenagh from Dunmore in County Galway in the 5th century. The Fenagh Visitor Centre houses a small exhibition about the abbey and the significant archaeological sites in the surrounding fields.
Costello Chapel is the smallest chapel in Europe and the 2nd smallest chapel in the world. This unique building was erected in 1879 by Edward Costello, a wealthy merchant. He built it as a memorial to his wife Mary Josephine who died aged 46. The remains of Josephine (1889) and of Edwards who died in 1891 are both interred in this beautiful memorial.
Blueways are a network of stunning trails that run alongside Ireland’s most idyllic lakes, canals and rivers. Taking you off the beaten track into the heart of unspoilt landscapes – by canoe, bike or on foot. Bike hire and guided paddle adventures are available locally. A walking and cycling trail starts on Ireland’s first floating boardwalk at Acres Lake in Drumshanbo.
Arigna Mining Experience
Close to Carrick on Shannon is the Arigna Mining Experience, which preserves the energy heritage of the Arigna Valley in County Roscommon. It is Ireland’s first Coal Mining Museum and as a visitor you will experience what working life was like underground in the mines.
Ballinamore Golf Club
The greens on the 9 hole course are sand based and Club facilities include changing rooms and the clubhouse which has a full bar and serves light refreshments. A spacious car park lies adjacent to the clubhouse. The Golf Club caters for all ages and visitors are always welcome.
Cuilcagh Legnabrocky Trail
Cuilcagh Mountain Park takes in 2,500 hectares on the northern slopes of Cuilcagh Mountain, at the heart of the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark. At 665 metres (2188 feet) above sea level, Cuilcagh is the highest point and the only true mountain in this part of the island of Ireland.
